Do I need general anaesthesia for IR procedures?

Most IR procedures require only local anaesthesia with mild sedation. You remain comfortable and drowsy but are not fully unconscious. This makes recovery significantly faster and safer than surgery.

How long does a procedure typically take?

Most procedures take between 30 minutes to 2 hours depending on complexity. Plan to be at the facility for 4–6 hours total including preparation and recovery time.

Will I feel pain during the procedure?

You will receive local anaesthetic at the puncture site and sedation to keep you comfortable. Most patients report pressure rather than pain. Post-procedure soreness is normal and managed with prescribed medication.

When can I return to work?

For desk-based work, most patients return within 3–5 days. For physically demanding jobs, 1–2 weeks is typically recommended. Your specific timeline will be discussed at your consultation.

Is a GP referral required to book a consultation?

A referral is helpful but not mandatory. We work directly with patients and also accept physician referrals through our Doctor Portal.

How do I share my imaging before the appointment?

Bring any relevant scans (CT, MRI, ultrasound) on a CD/USB or printed report. You can also send digital images via WhatsApp prior to your appointment.

My child needs an interventional procedure — where is that done?

Pediatric interventional radiology is delivered at Abu El Reesh, the Cairo University children's hospital, on Mondays from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. It is a university service, so children are seen through the hospital's own outpatient system or by referral from their paediatric team rather than by private booking. Neurointervention — brain and spine — is not part of this service and is referred to a dedicated neurointerventional team.
